Hillary Mutika

Operations Manager – Exploration

Every day, Hillary Mutika feels motivated because he’s part of the global drive towards cleaner energy. It’s one of the reasons he loves working for Global Lithium Resources.

“Exploration has always fascinated me and being part of this team makes me feel like a discoverer,” says Hilary.

Considered one of the Company’s characters, Hillary has a background in business, commerce, IT and mineral exploration, having commenced his career in Zimbabwe before migrating to Australia to continue his studies, eventually finding his way into the mining sector in 2011.

One of the first employees working on the GL1 project at Marble Bar, Hillary spent three months onsite when COVID travel restrictions were introduced. Having witnessing the early formation of GL1, when the Manna Project kicked off in the Goldfields, Hillary didn’t hesitate to become part of the team as the Company’s drive really impressed him.

At GL1, Hilary is responsible for ensuring all exploration activities are running smoothly at the camp, including site preparation and day-to-day activities. This can include procuring all sampling consumables, guidance to field assistants on site, ensuring sampling and the sampling process is compliant, conducting safety meetings, inductions and ensuring compliance around camp and site and coordinating earth moving activities.

“What I enjoy most about my job is working in a small team with diverse expertise and being in a workplace that has a strong safety culture,” he says. “I always look at the new deposits that have gone into production and after being part of the exploration phase, I feel a level of accomplishment. This is the same feeling each time a resource upgrade is announced.”

Hillary is a big fan of structured learning and is almost always enrolled in some type of study, and is well supported by the Company in these endeavours. He recently added a Graduate Certificate OHS to his two masters and has enrolled in a Cert IV Work Health and Safety course.

When not working, Hillary enjoys socialising, meeting new people and learning about other people’s life experiences as a way to enrich his own. If he comes across a good TV series, he’s likely to indulge in a binge.

Hillary takes a lot of road trips around Western Australia and enjoys visiting small regional towns. A fan of working remotely as “it always feels like a camping holiday.”

Cooking is also a passion, so Hillary volunteers to make most of the meals when he’s onsite at the Marble Bar camp. He makes dishes with no names, doesn’t taste them while cooking and judges their success along with everyone else when they gather to eat. So far, there haven’t been too many disasters!
